January 2010

Ray and I finally stopped by Sandys for sandwiches.  We took them to the beach so we could enjoy the ocean view and visit a bit with some of the folks from Trombo.  They have small Class C motorcoaches and they drive them over to Truman Annex each morning and spend the day just chilling in the sun.  It was nice to catch up a bit.  We will have to go back later in the week.

Friday night we attended the pre half marathon event.  Free beer and appetizers!!  (Pinch me… because this sure sounds like a Legion Conference)  All we have to do for all this and a free t-shirt is get up early and help pass water to the runners.  (Even managed to acquire an extra t-shirt for my sister; thanks to Saundra)  This is our fifth year supporting this event.    Only one person in our group won a door prize.. wasn’t anything but a t-shirt but they were winners non the less.

Ray and John were still hungry after all the assignments were passed out and all the food was gone so we headed off to Post 28.  They have a great steak dinner, hmmm just like at home.   Joyce and I saved ourselves for a Dairy Queen.

Weather was starting to warm up so I had a pretty fitful night.

Today, Saturday, got up VERY early and I accompanied  Ray to watch the sun rise.  Not all that great but took a couple of pictures anyway.  I did take one of a volunteer Australian Pine.  They have cut most of these down here on the island but this little guy was fighting for it’s life.

We also went to the flea market.  Ray really enjoys this… AND he managed to get out without purchasing a t-shirt!  This is a first.  Ray has quite a t-shirt collection and always wants just one more.  I did find a cute shirt we wanted to get for my sister but the brand/quality wasn’t very good.  Shirt stated.  “Wine me up; and watch me go”  Something Ray takes great pleasure in..

Stopped on Sugar Loaf Key on the way back to see the Worlds Largest Bathouse”  According to John…but his lips were moving.  We didn’t get back till after 2pm.

Dinner tonight was with the Joyce and John,  Cindy and Cliff and one straggler too.  We had Ruben Sandwiches.  Yum.

Sitting at the laundry mat doing our delicate stuff.  Ray is home watching Fox News.  Tomorrow is an early day, Race Day, and Joyce is coming by at 6am to pick me up so we can be in place for the runners.

Not sure if this sounds like I have been as busy as I feel… but I need a nap!

Spent the evening at the Red Barn watching Women Who Steal

Can’t get over how fast time flys here.  Arrived almost a week ago and have been running ever since.  So far we have managed to have a cuban mix sandwich, cuban breakfast sandwich… and dinner with Joyce and John a couple of times.  I still go to visit her at the Navy Lodge in the mornings for coffee and a quick read of the local paper.

We did have a few people over last night for dinner and we then went to a play at the Red Barn Dinner Theater.  This is in one of the oldest buildings in Key West.

Went downtown today with my friend Liz.  We had lunch outside at Fogertys and then we went to see Up in the Air with George Clooney.. he sure is cute.  Lunch was good , movie… well… not a happy one that is for sure.

Tonight we had a potluck with our “washer playing” friends.  It always surprises me when there is such a perfect mix of food with no prior planning.  Nice group of people.  Great food.

Tomorrow is the first meeting of the volunteers that assist with the half marathon.  Looking forward to that.

So far I haven’t seen a sunset.  Know it happens because it gets dark.. just haven’t been where I can catch the show or take any pictures.  Will need to do that soon.  The sunsets here are beautiful.

This is the greeting that awaits your arrival in Key West.  Hmm… very strange.

It has been an eventful 24hrs.  Starting with my inability to send a VERY important email yesterday morning.  Wouldn’t go through from my desktop… tried to send via my BB and still wouldn’t go out… Of course it didn’t bounce.. just didn’t get delivered.  Hmmm…  Tried to send via my iPhone.. nope.  You have got to be kidding me right.  These are the documents needed to kick off this years American Legion Boys State program.  Ok… deep breath… I will do it on Saturday morning.. or so I thought.

Let me go back to my arrival.  Ray didn’t know I was coming and Joyce, John and I surprised him.  That was nice.  Had a LOVELY dinner at El Siboney my favorite place in KW.  Went back to Joyce and Johns.. stayed for a short bit.. John had a WONDERFUL present for Ray.  He had located two single malt scotch glasses and then made a special box to store them in.  Ray was really surprised and touched by this gesture of friendship.  I was pooped so we left early.

Woke up to 79 degrees!  Not really that hot but remember I just left 40 degree weather.  Walked down to Joyces for coffee.  Great start of the day.

Back to trying to send email.  Logged into the wifi here in the campground.. wouldn’t send… took my laptop to the rec center.. wouldn’t send.  I did tell you the HAD to go our right???  Finally sent an email via exite webmail to hosting service.  They helped me adjust the outgoing port and authentication method.  Woo Hoo!  I could finally send!!

Last frustrating moment.. the Generator wouldn’t start.  You need to understand that this means No Air!  No Microwave!  No TV!!  No Wii!!  But even more important.. no charging the batteries that provide us with lights in the evenings.

Lucky for us the guy next door had the same type of generator and knew how to help.  After an hour or so of surging it is finally running smoothly.  Great place to be if you need assistance with stuff.  Next on the repair list is the waterheater.. runs on electric but not gas.  Not a good thing if you are dry camping.

We are heading out to the Sun Set Lounge here on base soon  for dinner and some 50/60s music.

Wrapping things up here at work today. Don’t want to leave anything unfinished for my coworkers. Ray has the Motorhome on site and is setting up my Wii and Hammock for my arrival. Woo Hoo!!
